2014년에 설립된 우리술문화원의 연구 기반 아래, 서양 중심의 연대 기술에서 벗어나 인간과 술, 그리고 우리 문화를 새롭게 조명하고자 한 작은 모임에서 출발했습니다. 우리가 ‘술학(Suul Studies)’을 주창하는 것은, 서양의 와인학에 견줄 한국 술에 대한 학문적 논의가 비로소 정착되고, 이를 통해 남북한의 술, 곧 '우리술(Suul)'의 위상이 더욱 높아지기를 바라는 까닭입니다.

우리는 반짝이는 별 하나의 발견보다 더, 눈부신 기술의 발전보다 더, 맛 있는 술 한잔을 빚는 일이 인류를 행복하게 해왔노라고 자부합니다. 우주과학 시대의 도래니, 과학기술의 발전이니 하는 말들은 오히려 인간의 시대를 강조하는 다른 말인 듯합니다. 이 술과 문화가 인류 문화유산으로서 술의 본래 모습을 되찾는 다리가 되기를 바랍니다.

The Society of Suul Studies, which publishes this journal, grew out of a small circle formed within the Korea Suul Institute―established in 2014―seeking to move beyond Western-centered chronological and cultural frameworks and to shed new light on human life, alcohol, and our cultural traditions. We advocate 'Suul Studies' because we hope that academic discourse on Korean alcohol—an endeavor that could stand alongside Western oenology—will at last take root, and that, through this, the stature of the alcohol traditions of both South and North Korea, collectively our 'Suul', will be further elevated.

We believe that brewing a glass of suul has brought greater happiness to humanity than the discovery of a glittering star or the advance of dazzling technologies. The language of the space age or scientific progress, in truth, seems but another way of underscoring the era of human beings. We hope that this journal will serve as a bridge through which suul may recover its original significance as part of humanity’s cultural heritage.
